3 Reasons Everyone Has Relevant Work Experience
Everyone has relevant work experience. Even if they think they don’t.
As a Career Coach I have had clients that say they don’t have relevant work experience. This is particularly the case for recent grads, those rejoining the workforce or people wanting to change career paths. I can hear them saying things like “but I’ve never done this before” and “they want 5 years experience and I don’t have any”. If this issue sounds familiar don’t worry because you absolutely do have relevant work experience. Here’s how;
1 – What you studied counts
Study fills you with knowledge and skills that are designed to get you into work. Even if you haven’t had any experience working in the job yet you will have excellent foundations. Project work and internships are absolute pluses.
2 – Your other jobs count (no matter how different)
You have worked as a waitress or sales assistant or in some completely unrelated role. This absolutely gives you relevant experience. All you need to do is think about how your work experience is relevant. Things like team leadership, collaboration, project management or customer service are all transferable.
3 – Your life experience counts
Seriously! If you have been travelling, at home with the kids or caring for a family member you will have experience no one else will have. All you need to do is make your experience relevant to the job you want.
Having experience that is different but relevant is just another thing that will set you apart from the crowd.
“As a job seeker, remember this: You only lack experience if they want it done the same old way”. – Robert Breault
