5 Myths All Job Hunters Need To Know

I hear so many myths about what you should and shouldn’t do as part of your job search so today I am here to debunk 5 of the biggest myths going around.

1 – Your resume should be 1 page

This is so so soooooo wrong. Your resume should be the length it needs to be to showcase your skills, strengths, experience and achievements in a concise way. You don’t want your resume to be a novel, but it is pretty hard to give details about all your greatness in just one page.

2 – You should always wear a suit to an interview

NO!!! You should wear an outfit that is suitable for the company culture and the role that you are applying for.

3 – Don’t apply for the job unless you match every single criteria

This is also wrong. The best candidate is not always going to match every single criteria that the recruiter is looking for. The recruiter or hiring manager is going to be looking for who matches the criteria most closely. This might mean that some criteria are missing. If you don’t apply because you are missing one or two things but you have everything else you might be missing a great opportunity.

4 – Applying for advertised jobs is the best way to land a new job

Wrong again. Experts believe that 70% of vacant jobs are never advertised. If you just apply for what is advertised then you will be missing out on a lot of jobs. Using your networks and making new connections is the way to go when looking for a great new role.

5 – You should already know how to apply for a new job and don’t need any help

This is maybe the biggest myth of the bunch. Most people are never actually shown how to apply for a job. The fact is most people have no idea what they are doing and with the job search market getting more and more competitive by the day you are going to need to do something pretty special to stand out from the crowd.
