5 Reasons Your Resume Is Rubbish
5 resume don’ts so your resume moves to the top of the list.
The fact is your resume is probably rubbish and you don’t even know it. For most advertised jobs you can expect in excess of 70 candidate applications. 95% of those are rubbish. Some are worse than others but out of 70 applications its likely that only 3 candidates are going to be interviewed.
I’ve had lots of clients come to me saying “that they have applied for over 100 jobs and haven’t even got a call back”. What do I tell them? To stop applying for jobs right now! The resume game is all about quality over quantity and there’s obviously a reason their resume isn’t getting them interviews.
If you can relate, then you need to give your resume an overhaul. The resume don’ts below will get you started
1 – You haven’t customised your resume to the job you’re applying for
To really stand out you need to spend time tailoring your resume to the job you are applying for. Use the language in the job ad, visit the company website or LinkedIn profile and be specific in how you portray yourself. Customising your resume takes much longer but isn’t it better to apply for 10 jobs and get 1 than 100 jobs and get 0?
2 – You used a standard template or resume writing service
The only thing worse than seeing a resume that’s in a standard template is a resume that has been written by someone else. If you want to land the job its much better being yourself and showing your personal brand. If you use a standard template or have someone write your resume for you it doesn’t give a clear picture of you, your style and how you will fit into the company.
3 – Its full of errors
Any errors in your resume show to an employer that you’re sloppy with your work. It’s that simple.
4 – You don’t make it easy for recruiters to contact you
So many resumes don’t include adequate contact details. You should be including your email address and phone number on every single page of your resume to make it easy for an employer to contact you.
5 – You simply have a list of tasks that you complete but no substance
A simple list of tasks you performed in a role is not going to cut it. The best resumes have achievements listed that give substance to their work.
Strong achievements set out in a customized resume free from errors that YOU wrote is what is going to set you apart. If you take the time to perfect your resume you will see results much faster.
