It’s The Holiday Season And I’m On The Hunt For A New Job. Am I Really Doomed?
We’ve all heard it. If you are looking for a job in November then you are not going to get into a new job until February at the very earliest.
Its no secret that the job market slows right down over Christmas. Lots of companies will have compulsory shut downs and there will be lots of people going on holidays. This doesn’t mean that it is impossible to get a role during this period. There is always a job for the right candidate. If you are on the hunt for a new job during this period here are few things that you can do to get yourself in-front of the right people.
1 – Attend lots of events
Network like crazy. Attend meet-ups, catch up with your friends, meet up with past coworkers and tell them ALL that you are looking for a new job. This will help you as you will have more people looking for that next career step for you (and you will have a great time doing it).
2 – Meet up with Recruiters
As recruiters are busily filling the last of the roles for the calendar year they will need to fill up their books with great candidates. If there are recruiters who you haven’t heard from in a while give them a shout. Let them know that you are still on the hunt for a new job. You could also reach out to recruiters who you would like to work with and see if they are free to meet you. You might find that they are looking for someone just like you for a temp or contract role.
3 – Take a temp or contract role
Take a temp or contract role. Even if this isn’t your long term career goal, you might be surprised at how much temping or contracting will help you with your next career goal. A temp role (in particular) might mean working at several different companies for a few days at a time but that will give you an increased chance to open your networks and will also be a great way to show how fantastic you are at what you do. Who knows, one of these temp or contract jobs might even lead to a permanent role in the future.
A client of mine was retrenched from a permanent consulting role in the middle of November. He knew that it was going to be hard to get a new job and with a young family and wife on parental leave he really didn’t need to be out of work over the most expensive time of the year.
What did he do??? All of the above.
Did he have to get out of his comfort zone to make this happen?? Absolutely!!!
What happened??? He was able to land a contract role with a previous employer that started 2 weeks after his role was made redundant. Needless to say, he was over the moon to be starting a contract and the stress and pressure on his family had been lifted. YAY! Christmas was saved!
