The Secret to Landing a Dream Career

Let me tell you a secret……..

You can land your dream career but you need to stop making these 3 mistakes first.

Mistake number 1 – You don’t know exactly what your dream career is

This is such an easy mistake to make and it happens all too often.  I had a client say that he knew what his dream career was.  It was to be a Project Manager.  The problem is there are hundreds of Project Manager jobs and most of these are not going to be your dream career.  You need to know exactly what you are looking for.  You need to know the details of the job and include everything you can think of.  Don’t limit just to tasks and responsibilities.  Include flexibility options, team size, company culture, leadership style of your manager, location, salary, benefits, etc.  Once you get clear on exactly what you want you can get clear on how to get there.

Mistake number 2 – You don’t what steps to take to land your dream career

So you know the specifics of your dream career, now all you need to do is figure out how to get there.  Is it a side step, a promotion, do you need to study or gain another qualification?  You need to plan out what you next 3 to 5 career steps are and start mapping this out.

Mistake number 3 – You don’t know how to market your skills, experience and strengths to show the value you will add

Now that you know the exact details of your dream career and you know the steps to get you there you need to know how to market yourself to get you in front of the right people.  This is going to get you our of your comfort zone.  You will need to start with identifying all relevant skills, experience and strengths and then you will need to get your professional brand sorted.  You will need to update your resume and LinkedIn profile and then you will need to start networking.

If you are making these mistakes then you are making it near impossible to landing your dream career.  To be in a career that you deserve you need to make sure you can articulate exactly what you want and then you need to know what it takes to get there.  Once you know that, you can see how your skills, experience and strengths match up.  Once you have done this you can start the job application process (read to give you some ideas).

It’s not going to be easy but it is going to be worth it!
